Priority Program SAMPLE

Begin of project: November 1, 2008

End of project: April 30, 2013

Status of project: January 31, 2016

The DFG-funded Priority Program SAMPLE deals with the processes at the South-Atlantic continental margins. BGR participated with two sub projects.
The project TRANSFORM investigated the transition between the sheared to the passive volcanic margin off Argentina. The topic of this work was the earliest phase of continental break-up. Another aim was the quantification of crustal composition in the area of the continent-ocean-transition.
Within project IMAGE conjugating parts of the continental margins of South America and Africa were analysed based on geophysical data. The main goal was to identify processes and forces that led to the onset of continental break-up.
Both projects resulted in a PhD-thesis.
