Borehole Map of Germany
Open Borehole Map
In accordance with the Law on Geological Data (Geologiedatengesetz), all mechanically drilled boreholes in Germany are to be registered at the relevant State Geological Survey Organization (GSO), which means the storage, processing and transmission of the harvested borehole data is decentralized. As each of the 16 GSOs is working on its own responsibility, the outcome is a variety of data structures.
This data heterogeneity as well as the distribution of the data on different web portals prevents an easy data interchange between the GSOs or with other parties using the data.
In order to simplify the exchange of drilling data and to create a national contact point for users of drilling data, the "Borehole Map Germany" was created as a central web application, which pursues the goal of collecting all released drilling data from all borehole databases in Germany to offer them freely to the public.
This Borehole Map of Germany now allows a search based on the main borehole master data attributes. Also only boreholes with declassified geological profiles can be filtered. For restricted information access to the layer data can be requested directly from the responsible party.
The following content information is provided:
- master data (e.g. name, contact person, drilling depth, coordinates etc.)
- layer data (stratigraphy, petrography and genesis visualized as drilling profile)
- groundwater data and level measurements
- documentation of different types of logging measurements
- documentation of sampling
- technical borehole data
- technical drilling data
This information is made available by the GSOs of the federal states through standardized geodata services (WFS - Web Feature Service). On the one hand this ensures that the data are continuously updated, on the other hand if the need arises, these interfaces can be used to integrate the data into other applications. Besides the web application, a WMS (Web Map Service) exists which provides the German Borehole Locations - GBL (Deutscher Bohrungsnachweis) for use in GIS (GeoInformation Systems) with functional visualization of layer data.
The key to cross-platform usage (interoperability) lies in defining an exchange format within the WFS-Interface; this is called the Borehole Markup Language Version 3 (BoreholeML3). The BoreholeML3 is an open XML standard which was developed by the GSOs specifically for borehole data. The Borehole Map of Germany uses BoreholeML3 code in the background.
Please refer to infogeo.de for more information on the data and instructions for use.
