Accreditation of the BGR geomechanical laboratory
Source: Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH
The geomechanical laboratory at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) was inspected in 2018 by the German national accreditation body (Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH, DAkkS). Since then the whole process chain from core drilling and transport, core description and rock mechanical testing has successfully passed the conformity assessments related to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (standard applying to laboratory competence). This supplements the previous stipulations in the "DIN/ISO EN 9001:2015" and "KTA 1401" standards.
The accreditation is undertaken in the context of the official location selection procedure for a final repository for high-level radioactive waste. It includs three in-house scientific investigation methods which are not covered by any of the existing DIN EN/ISO standards (so-called "in-house methods", one and triaxial strength tests, triaxial volumetric compaction tests and oedometer tests).
The accredited geomechnical lab will continuously comply with the requirements demanded by regular independent assessments. as part of the reaccreditation process.
