Born 16.04.1961 in Jena

Volker Steinbach studied geology at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg from 1980 until 1985. After receiving his PhD in 1987 he passed a research internship at the China University of Geosciences. Since 1990 he worked as a resource geologist at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, since 1998 as a desk officer at the Federal Ministry for Economy and Energy (BMWi) and since 2000 as head of the section “International Cooperation Europe, Asia, Oceania”. In 2007 he became head of the Division “Natural Resources, International Cooperation”, in 2009 head of the Division “Energy Resources, Mineral Resources” and in 2017 concurrently Vice President of the BGR. Volker Steinbach has been Honorary Professor of Circular Economy at TU Bergakademie Freiberg since 2023.
